As the most brutal terror organization on the planet, the Islamic State is fond of barbaric punishments for their prisoners. While summoning a large crowd to witness the killing of two captives in Abu Kamal, Syria, a pair of ISIS executioners were apparently so consumed by the painful death they were about to exact on their latest victims that they didn’t see what was above them until it was already too late.
As soon as an RAF Reaper aircraft noticed the jihadists preparing two shackled prisoners for a public death, the drone unleashed Hellfire missiles, killing one extremist and preventing the execution from taking place.
“When a van then unloaded two shackled prisoners in front of the crowd, it became clear that Daesh were organizing a public execution,” stated the Ministry of Defense. “A Hellfire missile was fired immediately, and scored a direct hit which not only killed one of the sentries but also brought the execution to an immediate halt, as the Daesh fighters fled the scene, and the crowd of civilians dispersed.”
There were too many civilians at the scene for the RAF crew to kill the fighters about to carry out the murders, but the drone spotted two militants stationed as sentries on the roof of a building overlooking the scene and was able to successfully take out one of them.
ISIS has been known to stage public executions as a way of instilling fear in the civilians under their control. For the most minor offenses, like drinking alcohol or, in the case of women, going outside without a veil, one can be immediately killed without trial. However, there is serious progress being made against the terror group which exacts these atrocities.
The attack came as in Iraq, local forces dislodged Islamic State from all but 12 square km of Mosul, a military spokesman said.
Planes dropped leaflets into the city telling civilians the battle was nearly won.
Seven months into the US-backed campaign, the militants now control only a few districts in the western half of Mosul including the Old City, where Islamic State is expected to make its last stand.
We must remain diligent in our fight against ISIS until every terrorist associated with the organization is exterminated from this earth. Their most recent public execution has been stalled, but make no mistake, they will not hesitate to strike again at the first opportunity.
